About Dulwich

Dulwich Village and environs enjoy an arguably unique location in London: trees, fields, ancient woods and even an 18-hole golf course, yet only a little over 4 miles from Whitehall.

Properties range from splendid detached period residences with substantial land to small1 - 2 bedroom flats but all those in the Village come under the auspices of the Dulwich College Estate, under whom standards are strictly maintained.

There are plenty of local amenities. Dulwich Park is perhaps best remembered for Queen Mary making her annual visit to see the spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas and the flowers remain in all their glory today. The world famous Art Gallery is Britain's oldest public gallery. It has recently undergone a face-lift and houses a magnificent collection of old masters, as well as housing regular specialist exhibitions. Further up the road from the gallery is London's last remaining tollgate, with the original tolls displayed on a board at the side of the road.

For the gastronomically minded, eating places of many different cultures are plentiful, ranging from bistros and bars to exclusive restaurants. There is also a profusion of good watering holes including the Crown and Greyhound in the Village.

A major attraction of Dulwich and indeed the reason that many people choose to reside in the area is the choice of good schools. Dulwich College is one of England's oldest schools and remains traditionally "boy only." Alleyn's provides a co-educational option and enjoys the reputation of being one of the best theatrical schools in the country. James Allens' Girls School, as the name implies, is for girls only and is regularly one of the leading performers in the various schools' league tables. Additionally, there is an abundance of excellent junior schools, both private and state, all within walking distance of the Village.

Central London is easily reached. There are train stations within a few minutes walk that run regular services to both the City (London Bridge & Blackfriars) and Victoria. All these termini are about 10 minutes away. A recent addition to the service is City Thameslink which not only provides commuters with a speedy route into the city but also has a direct link with Gatwick and Luton airports.
